This course introduces the essential principles of research and provides a strong foundation for students preparing to undertake a research project, proposal, dissertation, or thesis.
The course takes learners through the research process from the initial research idea to the final reporting of findings. It explains the nature and purpose of research, major types of research, research approaches, and the key stages involved in conducting a systematic academic investigation.
By combining research concepts with practical examples, the course helps learners understand not only what research is, but also how researchers make decisions throughout the research process.
📘 What Learners Will Explore:
- The meaning, purpose, and importance of academic research
- Characteristics of good and systematic research
- Major types of research
- Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches
- The relationship between a research problem, objectives, questions, and methodology
- The major stages of the research process
- Developing a research idea into a research study
- Research proposal development
- Data collection and data analysis
- Reporting and presenting research findings
- The responsibilities of a researcher
- Academic integrity, objectivity, and responsible research practices
🧠 Research Skills in Action:
- Critical Thinking: Identifying researchable problems and evaluating evidence.
- Problem Solving: Understanding how research can be used to investigate real-world problems.
- Academic Communication: Learning how research ideas and findings are communicated.
- Research Planning: Understanding how different stages of a research project connect.
🎯 By the End of This Course, You Will Be Able To:
- Explain the meaning and purpose of academic research.
- Distinguish major types and approaches to research.
- Describe the major stages of the research process.
- Identify the key components of a research study.
- Understand how research problems lead to research objectives and questions.
- Make informed decisions when beginning a research project.
- Prepare yourself for more advanced research and dissertation courses.
